10:39 am - Last Updated 23 Weeks Ago
What's totally cool is that I took a whole vacation day off last week. I didn't even answer the phone when it rang. I went to pre-school and the book fair and napped with the boy and saw the circus and everything.

It rocked.

We did launch the new site (Idea Locker). It launched September 4. And we're running 4 competitions  - any of you with teens or older kids...the prizes are 10K each. They are:
  • Digital Arts Challenge - For graphic novels, comic books, digital arts, photoessays, videos - anything that tells a story through visuals. Winner gets flown to NY, assistance in getting published, if applicable, and 10K.
  • Sports Evolution Challenge - For ideas related to sports. Like how the hockey bags now come with wheels. Or a self-trainer for lacrosse. Winner gets product developed, shadow an ESPN newscaster, and 10K.
  • Signature Style Challenge - Fashion. Yeah. I know. Fashion. Winner is flown to NYC to visit Tommy Hilfiger HQ. And gets 10K.
  • Going Green Challenge - Just for Activisteens. 10K for the best idea on how to improve the environment. Oh, and they get flown to meet one of the bloggers from 11th Hour. And be a featured blogger on 11th Hour.
Honestly, I am struggling a bit. I believe in this site, I believe in our goal. I know that it can help kids come up with better problem solving abilities, help inspire kids to create, and recognize intelligence that comes in different forms. My whole thing here was to try and connect kids through their intellectual passions. I know it will work.

It's just slow to get started. I am struggling. I can't seem to get the traction I need or want.

9:47 am - Anyone with a Tween/Teen?
We're in the mad middle of crazy development of a new web site that is intended to take our primary focus of 8-10 year old inventors and expand to 10-15 year old creatives of all kinds. We'll be doing competitions in visual storytelling/comics, sports, environmentalism, and fashion. The stuff is geared toward helping kids express themselves, their ideas, and their passions through competitions. The prizing is 10K plus a connection to real life. So for a fashion challenge you may win 10K and one of your designs on the runway at Fashion Week.

Anyway, we are doing a survey of kids to find out what they think of the new designs. Anyone with older kids, we would love feedback.

I went to the drugstore at lunch. I put on some Jean Nate because I thought it was funny and made me think of the good old days. Now I cannot breathe in my own presence.

Some things are funnier in theory than in execution.

4:45 pm - I'm a Loser
I am feeling crazy. I can't find a certain Bronx Mama with a K-zilla. And I very much am wanting to discuss graphic novels with her.

There's that. Also. Life is to busy and I no longer like being insane. That is all for now.

9:42 am - Other things of note...
1. I had back surgery in November. I don't think I posted about that. The long journey that started 4 years ago carrying Maggie through an airport and herniating a disc, ended November 8 after many months of agony. I am nearly thoroughly recovered. This means. I have had 5 surgeries in roughly 4 years. Maggie, Declan, gallbladder, appendix, discectomy. I am hoping this is the last one.

2. I am now 80 pounds less than I was the day I delivered Maggie. It is very strange. I have been over 200 pounds for most of my adult life. I now weigh about 40 pounds under that. I can shop anywhere I want. I don't have to struggle to get into stuff I like. Now I just don't know what I like and how to get dressed properly.

3. My job still rocks.

4. Here is Deco for Mardi Gras.

8:51 pm - All the news..
1) I am 37 now. I am apparently also entering perimenopause as evidenced by psychotic mood swings and a cyclical desire to abandon the family. I have been forced to quit smoking and get on BC (Nuva Ring) and prozac surrounding menses which are short and long, depending on my body's mood.

2) Maggie is going into K next year and I need to call the school and start the registering thing. She went to a cardiologist this AM for a murmur but all is well.

3) We put the cats down last year because of Declan's breathing but nothing seemed to change. Then about 6 months later, poof. Almost totally fine. No symptoms. Guess we did the right thing.

4) Work is work.

5) Maggie and Declan now take shifts in sleeping in Mama's bed. Dada is in the guest room most nights. This is okay with everyone.

6) Declan is not potty trained and does not sleep through the night. He will be 3 in May. This is okay with nearly everyone.

7) Happy Mardi Gras!

3:12 pm - Hair Dye
I know it has been forever. I have a question and you guys are probably the best source on this.

Maggie wants blue hair. Some blue streaks. I am happy to oblige. But I don't know how to do this properly. She's 4 1/2. I would like it to wash out in case she doesn't like it. Is blue Kool-Aid the best option? Does Manic Panic wash out?

5:43 pm - New Site, New Competition
So I'm always absent. No updates. Work is crazy. But here's why:

1) http://www.bkfk.com/iq/ - $25,000 prize money on the line. Staples competition - we're running it.
2) http://www.bkfk.com/ - Redesigned the web site (one of the mamas did it!!! - should I out her?)
3) http://www.bkfk.com/kids/freddi.asp - Cool book! Kids giving to charity!!

It has been so crazy but really wonderful.

Random statement. A LOT of our kid inventors and winners are homeschooled/alternatively edumacated. Nice.

So I have been driving to work every day for a year now and I sometimes notice this car that I think looks like a fancy Chrysler. I mean, I see it and go. Huh. Big fancy Chrysler. It looks like this:

only that's the Aussie one.

So yesterday I'm in the city with my boss and we pass one and he says "You know how much that car costs?"

I shrug.

"About $450,000."

My jaw drops.

What strikes me though, is that someone could have spent $450,000 on a car. And presumably they want to impress people. And what they got from me was "Is that some kind of fancy Chrysler?"

So tonight, Maggie has a big recital. YES. Maggie. Who I was pregnant with like....last week. The baby. The teeny baby.

So she has a dance recital with school. And she has to wear her hair in a bun. My scraggly little moppet will have her hair pulled back in a bun.

Mom, Dad, Nana, au pair, Dada, and yours truly will all be in attendance. I got her a bouquet of roses. We're going to dinner. Now. We are making a HUGE deal out of a dance recital. Well aware of this. It's adorable though.

Pictures to follow.

Hey Marylanders...

Is the use of the crab as a state thing just a touristy thing or is it a source of state pride? We're doing a poster for a competition we're running for Maryland only and the creative director put a crab on it and while it's cute, we're not sure that it is appropriate.

At the Cape, we actually do eat a lot of lobster but if someone were to put a lobster on a poster for a school...my reaction might be like. HUH?

What say you all? Crab? No crab?

(Oh, and if you want a poster, email me your address - it's an invention competition for all kids in Maryland ages 5-19 to invent school supplies, solutions, and products...)

7:23 pm - New Jersey/Philly Mamas?
Does anyone have a connection to Rebecca Frezza (of Rebecca Frezza and the Big Truck Band)? She's from Jersey and I have a need to try and get a direct path to her.

Gotta love this life...

10:30 am - NYC Mamas! Former City Mamas!
I have a friend who was just diagnosed with gestational diabetes and needs a nutritional nurse or an endocrinologist. Does anyone have any recommendations in the city?

Also, my knowledge of gestational diabetes is minor so I don't know EXACTLY what her options are so if you have advice, please let me know.

Thanks!
